BRIEF HISTORY
After the terrible eruption of Taal Volcano in 1754 which completely destroyed the towns of Taal, Lipa, Tanauan, and Sala in Batangas, the authorities of that period cast about for an ideal site for the capital of the province. They were easily impressed by the town of Batangas on the shores of Batangas Bay.
The town of Batangas had many things going in its favor-- its geographical position in relation to its boundaries of the province; its proximity to the provinces of Mindoro and Marinduque; its topography; and most importantly, its comaparitive safety from the menace of Taal Volcano the smallest active volcano in the world.
So, in 1754, after a century and a half since it was founded in 1601, the southern town of Batangas became the capital of Batangas Province. More than two centuries later, in 1969, the town of Batangas became a city.
PHILIPPINES 2000: BATANGAS CITY IS THE PORT
Batangas Port was declared a national port in 1956. This ensured the city's progress. Serving as a national port of entry and an alternative port of Manila North Harbor, it has facilitated the efficient transporation of goods and services to and from the island provinces. The planned conversion of the Port of Batangas into an international port of entry will greatly add dynamism to business and industrial activities along the Batangas Bay area and other commercial and industrial zones in the province. Batangas City is the capital of Batangas province, the lead province in the industrial region known as the CALABARZON.
