Mozcom Develops I-mode Monile Content

Mar 15, 2008 — As part of its thrust to provide information and business solutions to companies and consumers alike through Internet-based technologies, Mozcom has partnered with Tin Can Mobile to develop i-mode content for leading wireless service provider, Smart Communication, Inc. (Smart).

i-mode is a mobile email and Internet service launched by Japanese mobile communications leader NTT DoCoMo, Inc. back in 1999. Today it is used by more than 47.8 million subscribers in Japan alone. Through NTT DoCoMo’s global partnerships, it is also available to mobile subscribers in 15 other countries in Asia and Europe.

In the Philippines, i-mode is available to Smart Gold subscribers. These subscribers will have access to i-mail, allowing them to send email via their handset in the same simple way SMS messages are sent, and at the same cost of only P1 per message.  As technologies develop and user-lifestyles evolve, Smart plans to make available more attractive and practical content and information to i-mode users in the Philippines.

Mozcom, as the official web and WAP site partner of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), has developed the i-mode site of the PBA.  The site may be accessed at http://www.pba.ph/imode.

i-mode uses existing Internet technology such as HTTP and HTML, although slightly modified for the mobile phone.  For example, it uses a more stripped-down version of HTML called Compact HTML (C-HTML)  to keep the phone browser light-weight and ensure a more responsive user experience.

i-mode is more than just a technology.  It is really a complete business model.  Unlike the traditional telco vs. content provider (CP) revenue sharing scheme which heavily favors the telco, i-mode flips the model around giving the CP the lion share of the revenue, and thus, promoting more development of i-mode content.
