Shroud of Turin Exhibit Hits the Philippines
The famous Shroud is coming to the Philippines. This historic relic
is purportedly Jesus Christ's burial cloth, popularly known as the
Shroud of Turin. Acclaimed as the world's most studied
archaeological piece," the Shroud has sparked heated discussions and
debates among academic and religious circles. Various theories
attempting to prove (or disprove) its authenticity have likewise
proliferated over the years. For the first time in history, the
Shroud exhibition will be featured in the country, and suffice to say,
it will be fascinating.
Some may call it an urban legend while others will fight for its
authenticity. Nevertheless, the basic fact (or allegation, depending
on what side one is on) is that Jesus wore the Shroud of Turin during
his burial. The actual shroud is locked in an Italian cathedral, and
is taken out for public display in Turin only three or four times
within a century. The next exhibition schedule is set for the year
2025.
The wonder that is technology has enabled the creation of a life-size
replica of this artifact. This is the "touring Shroud" that will be
exhibited across four SM malls: from July 20 to August 19, 2007,
Building 4 of SM City (Mexico) Pampanga; from September 8 to December
9, 2007, Pavillion, SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City; from January 18 to
February 3, 2008, Entertainment Plaza, SM City Davao City; and from
April 4 to 27, 2008, Cebu Trade Hall, SM City Cebu. The life size
replica is composed of backlit and full-size transparencies and was
made in 2005 using digital photographic reproduction techniques. The
exhibit also features close-ups of the Shroud's individual details.
The exhibit allows everyone to go on a spiritual journey starting with
a walk through the cobbled streets of Jerusalem, then through the
corridors of the Cathedral of Turin, and finally ending with an
experience of the Italian sights at the Plaza de Turin Throughout the
said journey, visitors will learn more about the history and science
behind the world's most studied archaeological artifact, as well
reflect on the love of God for the entire mankind.
