Mozcom Offers Linux Migration Consulting
October 15, 2004

Due to dependence on Microsoft applications, migrating to Linux to save on desktop Operating System (OS) licenses is being held back. Mozcom now offers consulting services on migration planning or implementation with Wine (Windows Emulator), an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of the different Unix flavors including Linux.

Wine provides a Windows compatibility layer on top of Linux that allows you to run native MS Windows applications without requiring a copy of MS Windows itself, as it is a completely alternative implementation consisting of 100% Microsoft-free code.

AT&T's CTO, Hossein Eslambolchi, recently expressed interest in shifting their 70,000 PC's to Linux to save on licenses and cut down maintenance costs due to viruses common with Windows. The city government of Munich moved all of its 14,000 PC's to Linux just this year, and the City of Paris is contemplating a similar move.

"Technologies like Wine give end-users a choice for their desktop OS," said Dick Chiang, COO/CTO of Mozcom. "Because now they can use the same applications that they are already accustomed to like Microsoft Office, even on Linux OS. Coupled with other Open Source Technologies like LTSP, companies can implement diskless workstations running on Linux, with Windows apps on top."
